Observation Terrace Overlooking Salmon Landings at Utoro Fishing Port

Located in Shari Town, known for its salmon fishery, Utoro Salmon Terrace offers views of salmon landing operations at Utoro Fishing Port.

Shari Town, the gateway to the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage Site, is known for its salmon fishery. In autumn, salmon return to coastal waters on their way to spawn in their native rivers, and salmon landings increase at Utoro Fishing Port. Open to the public, Utoro Salmon Terrace is located next to Roadside Station Utoro-Shirietoku, with an observation space on the second floor overlooking the port.

From the terrace, visitors can watch salmon being unloaded from fishing boats, sorted, and transported. The elevated viewpoint also allows visitors to observe working areas of the harbor that are normally off-limits. Depending on the season, large numbers of salmon can be seen being landed, providing a view of Shiretoko's natural environment and the local fishing industry.

The terrace offers a close-up view of the process from salmon being brought ashore to being sorted and transported. Combined with a visit to the roadside station, it provides an opportunity to see how the natural environment of Shiretoko is connected to local livelihoods and industry.
