Centpure I & II – Higashikawa’s Cultural Center
Experience Iconic Chair Design Firsthand
Centpure is a cultural hub in Higashikawa, bringing together photography, furniture design and Daisetsuzan culture. It has two buildings: Centpure I, a renovated former school, and Centpure II, a space for exhibitions, books and community activities.
Centpure I occupies the former Higashikawa Elementary School, built in 1961. Its gallery displays the ODA Collection, curated by furniture researcher Noritsugu Oda. Chairs, tables, lighting and tableware showcase Nordic designs and modern furniture.
Centpure II introduces the town’s cultural heritage. The Higashikawa Photography Collection features photobooks by award-winning and local photographers. The Daisetsuzan Archives shares photographs, rare books and documents about the national park.
The “Forest of Books” library holds up to 75,000 books. The children’s corner has a heated floor, and locally made furniture adds comfort to reading spaces. The Community Café serves dishes with local ingredients. It offers a window into local culture.
