Michizakura Sake Brewery

A Gifu legend reborn in Higashikawa, crafted with Daisetsuzan waters

Discover a historic brewery reborn in Hokkaido after more than 140 years of tradition. Experience crystal-clear sake brewed using the pristine waters of the Daisetsuzan Mountains and locally grown rice.

Founded in 1877, Michizakura Sake Brewery moved its production from Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, to Higashikawa, Hokkaido, in 2020. Seeking the ideal brewing environment—stable low temperatures and high-quality water—the brewery began a new journey as a unique brewery supported by the local community and operated by private artisans. Here, the abundant underground currents from the Daisetsuzan Mountains flow freely, forming the heart of every bottle they produce.

Their sake, which beautifully expresses the local terroir, is known for its crystal-clear texture and clean, refreshing finish. A standout is the "Aiyama Junmai Daiginjo," a masterpiece that harmonizes floral aromas with a delicate flavor profile. Seasonal limited editions also add to the excitement, such as the pale pink "Sakura Nigori" raw sake that appears around the Peach Festival (Hina Matsuri). Within their meticulously crafted lineup, you are sure to find a favorite bottle that reflects the unique character of this land, cradled by the nature of the Daisetsuzan Mountains.

Please note that brewery tours are not currently available. Parts of the brewery can be viewed through the windows in the entrance and shop area.
