Hakodate Haikara-Gō
The restored Chinchin train "Hakodate Haikara-Gō" runs through the streets of Hakodate. It operates for a limited time, mainly on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays during the operating period (suspended during bad weather such as rain). The Hakodate Haikara-Gō, which is popular for its retro exterior and interior that allows you to enjoy the atmosphere of yesteryear, first operated as a passenger car in 1918, and then as a "Sasara Densha" for snow removal equipped with a large bamboo brush. It was active for half a century. It was restored as a tourist train in 1993 and has become popular with tourists. You can use it not only for sightseeing in the city, but also for general movement within the city. The conductor pays the fare on the train, which is rare these days. After paying, you can also take home a ticket stub with a Haikara-Gō design on it as a souvenir. By the way, apart from Hakodate, Sapporo is the only city in Hokkaido where trains operate.
