Feel the Chill of a -15°C World Above the Sea of Okhotsk
Experience the raw beauty and power of drift ice—any time of year. Perched atop scenic Mt. Tento, this destination offers an unforgettable sub-zero adventure and sweeping 360-degree views.
Step inside and enter a frozen world kept at -15°C. Surrounded by 100 tons of real drift ice, the sharp chill fills the air as your breath turns white before your eyes. Touch the solid ice and imagine its long journey across distant northern seas.
In the aquarium, delicate clione—known as the “angels of the drift ice”—drift gracefully through the water, while charming lumpsuckers and snailfish delight visitors with their round, endearing forms. After your sub-zero experience, stop by the first-floor café and try the signature “drift ice soft serve.” Made with salt from the Sea of Okhotsk, its gentle saltiness pairs perfectly with caramel sweetness.
Finally, head up to the rooftop observation terrace. A breathtaking 360-degree panorama unfolds, featuring Lake Abashiri and the Shiretoko Mountain Range, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park・Shibazakura Festival
A Velvet Carpet of Pink Blossoms Across the Rolling Hills
From early May to early June, ten hectares of hills transform into a pink paradise. Nurtured by a single farmer over 20 years, this breathtaking landscape offers a sensory journey through one of Hokkaido’s most iconic spring sights.
Imagine standing in a sea of blossoms, where shades of crimson and violet paint the earth like a plush velvet carpet. As you wander the 50-meter-high hills, the sweet fragrance of moss phlox (shibazakura) drifts on the May breeze. At the heart of this wonderland sits Yamatsumi Shrine. Its striking pink torii gate, perfectly matching the blooms, creates a stunning contrast against the blue sky—a dream-like scene famous on social media.
The park offers more than just a view. Catch the wind on an 820-meter go-kart track or enjoy a leisurely ride to the second observation deck for a sweeping panorama. After exploring, find serenity at the park’s natural footbath. Soaking in warm, mineral-rich waters amidst the floral scent is the ultimate way to recharge. During the annual festival, vibrant musical performances on the outdoor stage ensure your Hokkaido spring visit is truly unforgettable.

Mt. Io
Feel the Raw Power of the Earth
Witness the dramatic steam and vibrant sulfur crystals of an active volcano.
Mt. Io, also known as Atosanupuri, is an active volcano and the source of the healing waters of Kawayu Onsen. Here, the earth breathes through countless vents, sending thick white steam into the sky and filling the air with the earthy scent of sulfur. It is one of the few places where you can stand within arm’s reach of volcanic activity and feel nature’s energy firsthand.
In the Ainu language, Atosanupuri means “naked mountain,” reflecting its stark appearance. Once a center for sulfur mining, the mountain’s rugged brown slopes remain largely untouched by greenery, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. As you walk the grounds, you can hear the deep rumble of steam rising from the earth, a reminder of its living presence.
The experience at Mt. Io is immersive. You can feel warmth radiating from the ground and the soft touch of drifting steam on your skin. Bright yellow sulfur crystals coat the rocks, creating a vivid contrast against the dark volcanic soil.
At the foot of the mountain, a different beauty appears. From June to July, colonies of Ezo Isotsutsuji (marsh tea) bloom, covering the area in delicate white flowers that contrast with the rugged terrain.
The Tsutsugahara Nature Trail connects Kawayu Onsen to Mt. Io, and guided tours offer a chance to explore while learning about the area’s geology and ecosystem.

[Accommodation] Kawayu Hot Spring
The Highly Acidic Hot Spring Gushing in Akan-Mashu National Park
A hot spring resort known for its highly acidic water sourced from Mt. Io (Sulphur Mountain), an active volcano in Akan Mashu National Park. Visitors can also observe the breathtaking diamond dust phenomenon in winter.
The greatest draw of Kawayu Onsen is its exceptional water quality. The highly acidic water, rare even in Japan, boasts a strong acidity of pH 1.6 to 1.8. This unique quality has made it popular for centuries, thanks to its excellent bactericidal properties and its skin-beautifying effect, which leaves the skin smooth and soft. The thermal warmth of the hot springs penetrates deep into the body's core. Throughout the onsen town, you can easily enjoy the local bounty at free-flowing footbaths (ashiyu).
Located in a region of severe cold, Kawayu Onsen offers a unique winter spectacle. During the coldest months, the "Diamond Dust" phenomenon—where frozen water vapor glitters in the clear air—can be observed. After witnessing this beautiful, fantastical sight, the highly acidic hot water is the perfect cure, warming your body and soothing your fatigue. Enjoy this unforgettable, sensory experience unique to winter in Kawayu.

[2] For outdoor enthusiasts, enjoy the adventurous feeling of open-air hot springs (on the shores of Lake Kussharo)
For those who want to enjoy a secluded hot spring surrounded by nature, I recommend Ikenoyu and Kotan no Yu. These hot springs have simple structures and offer a sense of openness, allowing you to soak in the hot springs while enjoying a close view of Lake Kussharo.
