Seseki Hot Spring

A Seaside Sanctuary Revealed at Low Tide

Located on the rugged Shiretoko coast, Seseki Hot Spring is a natural bath visible only at low tide, offering sweeping ocean views and a unique connection to the sea.

Along the rocky shoreline of Rausu, this historic open-air bath has endured the elements since its discovery in 1899. Its defining feature is its relationship with the tides. At high tide, the bath disappears beneath the sea and re-emerges as the water recedes. The name “Seseki” comes from the Ainu word sesek, meaning “hot” or “to become hot,” referring to the geothermal waters rising from the coastal rocks.

From the bath, visitors can gaze across the open waters and, on clear days, see Kunashiri Island on the horizon. The sound of waves, the sea breeze, and the scent of the ocean create an immersive experience.

Maintained by local kelp harvesters, the site remains largely untouched. There are no changing rooms or privacy screens, and visitors are asked to greet the caretaker at the nearby kelp hut before bathing. It is a rare place to experience the raw beauty of Shiretoko’s coastline.
