Cape Chikyu, jutting out from the southern tip of the Etomo Peninsula, is one of Japan’s most breathtaking scenic viewpoints. Towering cliffs about 100 meters high line the cape, offering sweeping views of the vast Pacific Ocean. Consistently ranked among Hokkaido’s top scenic spots, it draws many visitors each year, especially on January 1 for the first sunrise of the New Year. 

The name Chikyu comes from the Ainu word “Chikep,” meaning “cliff.” Over time, it evolved into “Chikyu,” the Japanese word for “Earth,” giving the cape its poetic name.

The iconic white octagonal Chikyu Misaki Lighthouse stands 130 meters above sea level on the cliffs. First lit in 1920, it still serves as an important navigation point for vessels. While usually closed, it occasionally opens to the public on holidays such as Marine Day. 

From the observation deck above the lighthouse, you can take in a spectacular view where you can truly sense the curvature of the Earth. On clear days, distant Mt. Komagatake and even the Shimokita Peninsula may be visible. Between spring and autumn, dolphins and whales can sometimes be spotted offshore. 

Ring the “Bell of Happiness” with someone special—legend says it may bring you good fortune. 

Surrounding walking trails invite visitors to enjoy forest bathing and seasonal wildflowers. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers, with falcons often seen nesting and hunting nearby.
