Date City Museum of History and Culture
Discover the Spirit of the Samurai
Experience the traditional art of Japanese sword forging in Date City, where samurai heritage still echoes through history.
At this historic swordsmith workshop, visitors can observe the craftsmanship of Master Swordsmith Watanabe Korehira, who has spent more than 40 years forging Japanese swords. Through firsthand explanations from the master himself, guests gain insight into the history, symbolism, and traditional techniques behind the Japanese sword, or Nihonto.
Step inside the workshop and enter a solemn world far removed from everyday life. The heat of the glowing forge, the metallic scent of iron, and the sharp clang of hammer strikes create a powerful atmosphere. As sparks fly from red-hot steel beneath each blow, visitors can witness the beauty and precision of traditional sword making up close — a captivating sight that leaves a lasting impression.
Once carried by samurai as both weapons and symbols of their spirit, Japanese swords are now admired around the world as remarkable works of art. Through displays of forging techniques and finely crafted blades, visitors can discover the enduring heart of Japanese craftsmanship. Forging demonstrations by Master Watanabe are held on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays only, and advance reservations are required. Visitors are encouraged to contact the museum at least two weeks before their preferred visit date.
