The Mimatsu Diagram Recording the Birth of Showa-Shinzan
Located near Lake Toya, this memorial hall displays records of the growth of Showa-Shinzan, formed in the 1940s, along with historical photographs and observation materials.
Mimatsu Masao Memorial Hall stands at the foot of Showa-Shinzan. The volcano was formed between 1943 and 1945 by volcanic activity at Mt. Usu, as a flat wheat field was uplifted to form a volcano. White steam can still be seen rising from the mountain slopes today.
The formation process of Showa-Shinzan was recorded in detail by Mimatsu Masao, a local postmaster. During World War II, when photographic film was difficult to obtain, he conducted fixed-point observations from the same location and angle, creating numerous sketches. Based on these observations, the “Mimatsu Diagram” was compiled as a record showing ground uplift and mountain growth, and was presented at an international volcanology conference in 1948.
Inside the hall, visitors can view the Mimatsu Diagram alongside historical photographs and observation materials from the period. With views of Showa-Shinzan from nearby, the exhibits provide an opportunity to learn about the formation of the volcano and Mimatsu’s continuous observations and records.
