Mt. Usu, continuing activity from about 20,000 years ago, is an active volcano that erupted 4 times in the 20th century (1910, 1944-1945, 1977-1978, 2000). As Toya-Usu UNESCO Global Geopark, it is recognized as Japan's first UNESCO Global Geopark, and together with Lake Toya born from a giant eruption about 110,000 years ago, it inscribes the dynamic history of the earth.
When you go up to the summit station by Mt. Usu Ropeway, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the crater plain spreading below, the crater emitting smoke, and the magnificent scenery of the blue lake surface of Lake Toya and Funka Bay spreading before your eyes. From the crater observation deck, you can observe up close the slopes where reddish-brown volcanic rocks are exposed and terrain where traces of eruptions remain vividly. At the summit, the smell of sulfur drifts, white steam rising from the ground sways in the wind, and the warmth of geothermal heat is transmitted from underfoot. Standing on the observation deck, cold mountain wind caresses your cheeks, and the sound of steam heard from afar makes you feel the vitality of the volcano. This is a place where you can experience the powerfulness of the volcano continuing to be active now and the magnificent scenery created by nature.
