Mt. Usu
Witness the Power of an Active Volcano and Panoramic Views of Lake Toya
Ride the ropeway to the summit, where observation decks overlook dramatic craters and the scenic expanse of Lake Toya, for a firsthand encounter with the raw energy of a living volcano.
As part of the Toya-Usu UNESCO Global Geopark—one of the first in Japan—Mt. Usu tells the dynamic story of the Earth alongside Lake Toya, which was formed by a massive eruption about 110,000 years ago. This active volcano has been shaping the landscape for around 20,000 years and erupted four times in the 20th century: 1910, 1944–1945, 1977–1978, and 2000.
The Mt. Usu Ropeway brings you to the summit station, where sweeping views unfold across the crater basin and steaming vents. Beyond lies the deep blue of Lake Toya and the vast expanse of Funka Bay. From the crater observation deck, rugged slopes of exposed reddish-brown volcanic rock and landscapes shaped by past eruptions come into clear view.
At the summit, the scent of sulfur lingers in the air as white plumes of steam rise from the ground and drift with the wind. Beneath your feet, geothermal warmth radiates through the earth, while a cool mountain breeze brushes against your skin. In the distance, the faint sound of escaping steam echoes—an ever-present reminder of the Earth’s heartbeat. Here, the raw power of a living volcano surrounds you.
