Statue of Dr. William S. Clark

A Belief Still Carried On - "Boys, be ambitious!"

William Smith Clark was the first Vice-Principal of Sapporo Agricultural College, the predecessor of Hokkaido University. Dr. Clark's famous words left to his students when he departed Sapporo, "Boys, be ambitious," are also the motto of Hokkaido University.

Passing through the green space known as the Central Lawn on campus, you'll find Dr. Clark's bronze statue right next to Furukawa Hall. It was erected in 1926 as part of the 50th anniversary commemoration of the university's founding. Although it was lost due to metal contributions during the Pacific War, it was rebuilt in 1948.

Its figure quietly standing in the lush green campus has a certain charm and is a popular spot for commemorative photos.

The Clark statue on campus is a bust showing him from the chest up. A full-body statue of the doctor pointing into the distance with his right hand stands at the Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill in the suburbs of Sapporo City.
