Hokkaido University's Ginkgo and Poplar Avenues
Beautiful Natural Scenery Symbolic of the University
The poplar avenue is a symbolic landscape of the nature-rich Hokkaido University. Its origins lie in a small-scale planting in 1903, followed by a tree-planting practice by forestry students in 1912, which led to the avenue's almost current appearance. However, in September 2004, Typhoon No. 18 caused nearly half of the poplar trees to collapse. Subsequently, with support from across the country, fallen trees were restored and young trees were planted. Now, visitors can stroll along an approximately 80-meter avenue covered with wood chips. The vibrant green leaves of summer are beautiful, and the magical winter scenery blanketed in snow is also highly recommended.
At the northern edge of the campus, there is also the "Heisei Poplar Avenue," newly planted in 2000. Seventy poplar trees stand tall on both sides of the about 300-meter promenade, offering views of cows and sheep grazing in the farm beyond the trees.
The ginkgo avenue, with 70 trees planted along both sides of the road also known as Kita-13-jo Street, is a stunning sight. Typically reaching its peak from late October to early November, the about 380-meter-long arch of ginkgo trees glows in golden hues. The carpet of fallen leaves that spreads across the ground also captivates visitors.
During the peak viewing season, the Hokkaido Golden Leaf Festival (Kon'yosai) is held, illuminating the entire ginkgo avenue. Visitors can enjoy a magical and enchanting scene.
