Lake Okotanpe
A jewel-like lake surface viewed from the observatory
As one of Hokkaido’s “Three Mysterious Lakes,” Lake Okotanpe enchants visitors with its dramatic color shifts and untouched natural surroundings.
Lake Okotanpe rests quietly on the western foot of Mt. Eniwa in Chitose. This dammed lake, with a circumference of About 5 km and a maximum depth of 21.2 m, is considered one of Hokkaido’s “Three Mysterious Lakes,” alongside Lake Shinonome near Lake Shikaribetsu and Lake Onnetō near Lake Akan. Hidden deep within primeval forest, the lake itself cannot be viewed in full, but from the observatory along Route 78, its mysterious waters spread out below.
When sunlight strikes the lake, the surface shifts dramatically—from cobalt blue to emerald green—shimmering like a precious gemstone. Surrounded by quiet forest, the crisp air and fresh scent of trees make this a moment of serenity that feels far removed from everyday life. The untouched landscape and its natural palette captivate all who visit.
