Mt. Tarumae
A Breathtaking Volcanic Landscape Near Lake Shikotsu
Located southeast of Lake Shikotsu, Mt. Tarumae is an active volcano with a distinctive lava dome shaped like a pudding. Standing at an elevation of 1,041 meters, this mountain offers a unique volcanic landscape that is both dramatic and unforgettable.
From the 7th station parking lot, hikers can reach the summit (East Peak) in about 60 minutes. However, due to volcanic gas emissions, access to the inner crater is currently restricted, and entry beyond the outer rim is prohibited.
Despite this, Mt. Tarumae remains a popular destination for both beginner and seasoned hikers. The trail allows visitors to enjoy beautiful alpine plants and take in panoramic views of Lake Shikotsu and the vast Pacific Ocean. It’s the perfect place to experience the thrill of a real mountain hike without requiring extensive gear or experience.
