Feel the quiet atmosphere of the late Edo period as you explore the remains of a frontier samurai outpost surrounded by peaceful forest.

Designated as a National Historic Site and one of the largest historic sites in Hokkaido, the Historic Site of the Sendai Clan Shiraoi Encampment offers a glimpse into life on Japan's northern frontier during the final years of the samurai era. Built in 1856 by the Sendai Domain, it served as an important military outpost responsible for northern defense. More than 120 samurai were stationed here, guarding six gates and carrying out military duties in this remote region.

The spacious grounds cover about 66,000 square meters and preserve the atmosphere of the period. Visitors can explore historic earthworks and the reconstructed Tsume-gomon Gate, which reflects the discipline and presence of the samurai who once served here.

The on-site Shiraoi Sendai Clan Jinya Museum, designed in the style of a traditional samurai residence, displays about 300 historical artifacts, including maps, armor, and weapons. Combining history, culture, and natural beauty, this remarkable site is one of Shiraoi's premier historical attractions.
