Hokkaido Jingu Tongu
Sapporo's oldest komainu at a historic shrine in central Sapporo
Founded as a place for worshipping Hokkaido Jingu from afar, the shrine is known for its two pairs of komainu and the mikoshi procession held during its September Annual Festival.
Located in central Sapporo, Hokkaido Jingu Tongu was established in 1878 so people could worship more easily during the snowy winter months. The current worship hall was rebuilt in 1910 using timber from the former worship hall of Hokkaido Jingu, preserving its Meiji-era history.
Two pairs of komainu (guardian lion-dog statues) stand on the grounds. The pair dedicated in 1890 is made of Sapporo soft stone and is considered the oldest in the city. Local tradition associates the pair near the torii gate with success in love, and the pair near the worship hall with safe childbirth and fertility. Visitors can learn about the beliefs surrounding the statues and Sapporo soft stone.
Every September, the Annual Festival features a mikoshi procession through the city, with around 400 participants carrying the portable shrine.
