Hidakaso is an exceptionally rare alpine plant found only around Mt. Apoi in the southern Hidaka Mountains of Hokkaido. Discover the story of this delicate white flower, shaped by one of Japan’s most unique geological landscapes.

At the summit of Mt. Apoi, rising 810 meters above sea level, Hidakaso quietly takes root in rugged peridotite scree—rock originating deep within the Earth’s mantle and exposed at the surface. This endemic species survives only in the unique environment of the southern Hidaka Mountains.

Following the spring snowmelt, delicate white flowers about 2 centimeters in diameter bloom atop slender stems reaching 10 to 25 centimeters high. Their layered white petals stand out against the gray rocky landscape, creating a memorable sight for hikers and nature lovers.

Adapted to this harsh geological environment, Hidakaso has persisted through changing conditions. Originally known as “Tsushimaso” after its discoverer, the plant was later renamed “Hidakaso” to symbolize the natural heritage of the wider Hidaka region. Today, climate change and environmental pressures threaten its habitat, and conservation efforts continue to protect this remarkable species for future generations.
