Chishima Zasa Craft Museum
Masterful Handwoven Artistry from Northern Bamboo
Discover the living wisdom of Hokkaido’s snow country through Chishima Zasa, a resilient bamboo also called "Nemagari-take." In Pippu Town, artisans have long transformed this flexible plant into practical and beautiful crafts.
The gallery showcases over 200 pieces, including bags and flower baskets. Highlights include "Smoked Chishima Zasa," kiln-treated for over a year, glowing with a deep soot-brown luster that deepens with use.
Artisans from Northern Bamboo Studio carefully select the finest stalks from the mountains. Thin strips from 2–3 cm stalks are delicately woven, revealing the warmth of handcrafting through the aroma of smoked bamboo and the subtle clicking of materials. Smooth textures and natural curves make each piece both elegant and functional.
Visitors can join hands-on workshops, from bamboo collection to basket weaving, experiencing the craft firsthand. Seasonal forest scenery enhances the visit, making the museum both a showcase of finished works and a connection to Hokkaido’s natural and cultural heritage.
