Otokoyama Nature Park
A delicate purple carpet on the hills of Tossho
Witness one of Hokkaido's largest colonies of Katakuri (Asian fawn lilies) from a 220-meter hilltop, with stunning views as winter’s snow melts away.
Located on the southern tip of Tossho, just a short trip from central Asahikawa, Otokoyama Nature Park spans 32 hectares of pristine natural beauty. The park opens for only about one month each year. During this brief window, the slopes are transformed into a sea of vibrant purple Katakuri, with flashes of blue Ezo-engosaku (crested corydalis) and other wildflowers blooming in succession.
As you stroll along the 800-meter walking path, the fresh scent of damp earth fills the air, and a gentle spring breeze brushes past, offering a refreshing sensation that awakens the senses.
From the park's viewing points, take in panoramic vistas of the Tokachi mountain range and the clear waters of the Ishikari River below. Accompanied by the peaceful melody of birdsong, the scenery perfectly captures the essence of a Hokkaido spring. Well-maintained boardwalks make the park ideal for photography and quiet nature observation. Among the thousands of purple blooms, you might even spot a rare white Katakuri—a lucky find for any visitor!
