Nearly every day in Sounkyo temperatures reaches below zero, freezing the streams, rivers, and surrounding waterfalls during the winter. The Hyoubaku Festival, a festival centered around the beauty of the frozen Ryusei and Ginga Waterfalls, is held from late Jan. until Mar. During the festival, a host of ice sculptures fill the area and are lit up at night, making for colorful displays that visitors can explore.
