Ryusei Falls & Ginga Falls

Twin waterfalls from Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, viewed together from Sobakudai Observatory

Located in Sounkyo Gorge, Ryusei Falls and Ginga Falls are two famous waterfalls selected for Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. From the Sobakudai Observatory, visitors can enjoy a rare view of both waterfalls side by side.

Ryusei Falls plunges powerfully down a 90-meter cliff, sending up roaring sprays of white water. In contrast, Ginga Falls flows gracefully down a 120-meter rock face like delicate strands of white silk. Because of their contrasting appearances, Ryusei Falls is often called the “male waterfall,” while Ginga Falls is known as the “female waterfall.”

A 20-minute uphill walk from the parking area leads to the Sobakudai observation deck. From here, both waterfalls can be seen cascading down the dramatic cliffs of Sounkyo Gorge. The sound of rushing water echoes through the valley as cool mist drifts through the air.

Deep green trees cover the surrounding cliffs, creating a striking contrast with the white waterfalls. Near the parking area, the shop Taki Mintara offers local specialties and a place to rest.
