Mt. Asahidake, the highest peak in Hokkaido, is the iconic crown jewel of Daisetsuzan National Park. Known as "Kamuy-mintar" (The Playground of the Gods) in the Ainu language, this majestic mountain offers a profound encounter with nature's dramatic seasonal shifts.

At Hokkaido’s highest altitude, Mt. Asahidake reveals remarkable natural phenomena. In mid-June, it hosts Japan’s latest-blooming Chishima-zakura cherry blossoms, while from late August, it transforms into a vibrant canvas of crimson and gold, marking the earliest arrival of autumn in the country.

The mountain is alive with the pulse of the earth. As you wander, you might hear the high-pitched whistle of the rare pika (rock rabbit) echoing through the stone fields, or the powerful roar of volcanic steam escaping from active fumaroles. The crisp, cool air carries the faint scent of sulfur, a reminder of the primal forces that shaped this landscape.

For those seeking the views without a strenuous trek, the Asahidake Ropeway offers a 10-minute aerial journey to Sugatami Station at an altitude of 1,600 meters. From here, a well-maintained trail leads you through fields of delicate alpine flora. After about 30 minutes, you will reach Sugatami Pond. The sight of the rugged peaks reflected in the mirror-like surface of the water, framed by plumes of white volcanic smoke and the vast silence of the highlands, truly captures the essence of a place where gods come to play.
