Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway
A 10-minute aerial ride to the breathtaking peaks of Daisetsuzan
Experience sweeping views of the Daisetsuzan mountain range and vibrant alpine flora on Mt. Asahidake, Hokkaido’s highest peak at 2,291 meters.
The journey begins at the base station, about 1,100 meters above sea level. A large gondola with a capacity of 101 passengers carries visitors up to Sugatami Station at about 1,600 meters, climbing nearly 500 meters in elevation in just 10 minutes. Even through the windows, you can feel the crisp mountain air. Below, a deep green carpet of coniferous forests stretches across the landscape, while the horizon reveals a magnificent panorama of peaks rising over 2,000 meters.
Around Sugatami Station, Chishima cherry trees—known as Japan’s latest-blooming cherry blossoms—usually bloom in delicate pale pink around mid-June. In summer, colorful alpine flowers brighten the rocky terrain, marking the arrival of the short alpine season. By late August, Japan’s earliest autumn colors begin to appear. Soon the mountainsides transform into a brilliant tapestry of reds and yellows, creating a spectacular carpet of color.
