Tenninkyo Hot Spring
A Hidden Hot Spring Retreat in the Heart of Daisetsuzan
Tenninkyo Onsen is a historic hot spring village set in a dramatic gorge along the Chubetsu River inside Daisetsuzan National Park. First opened in 1897, it has long been known as Asahikawa’s “backyard retreat” and serves as a base for climbing the Daisetsuzan mountains.
The secluded inn nestled in the valley offers an authentic bathing experience with marble and cypress baths, where natural spring water flows straight from the source. From the stone outdoor bath, you can gaze up at towering columnar cliffs and take in spectacular views that change with the seasons. Day visitors are also welcome.
In the small onsen town, you’ll find a free footbath called Tennyo no Yu, perfect for a casual soak. Just nearby lies Hagoromo Falls, ranked among Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls—a beautiful spot to explore before unwinding in the hot springs.
