Located at the foot of Mt. Asahidake, the highest peak in Hokkaido, the Asahidake Visitor Center is a key base for exploring the vast alpine landscapes of Daisetsuzan National Park safely and insightfully.

Rising to 2,291 meters, Mt. Asahidake stands as the symbolic peak of the Daisetsuzan mountain range. Situated right at the main trailhead, the visitor center provides up-to-date information on changing mountain conditions, including alpine plant blooms, wildlife activity, and current trail status. Inside, a warm, wood-accented space welcomes visitors with informative exhibits that explain the formation of the mountains and the natural environment of the park. Knowledgeable staff are always on hand, offering guidance and reassurance—especially valuable for first-time visitors and beginner hikers.

As you breathe in the fresh scent of timber and gaze out at the primeval forest spreading beyond the windows, anticipation builds for the adventure ahead. If you listen closely, you may hear the call of the Pine Grosbeak or catch a glimpse of the nimble Ezo chipmunk nearby. Seasonal guided tours are also offered, allowing visitors to experience the mountains more deeply: delicate alpine flowers in summer, some of Japan’s earliest autumn foliage, and world-renowned powder snow in winter.
