Tenninkyo Gorge

A Scenic Gateway to Daisetsuzan

Tenninkyo Gorge lies in the upper reaches of the Chubetsu River, which flows from Mt. Chubetsu on the southeastern slopes of Daisetsuzan National Park. Surrounded by dramatic columnar joints created by a massive volcanic eruption some 30,000 years ago, the gorge offers breathtaking scenery.

One of its most iconic sights is “Shichifuku-iwa,” a striking wall of seven needle-like rocks that rise sharply toward the sky. Formed from pumice and volcanic ash fused at high temperatures, these natural pillars tell the story of the region’s fiery origins.

Other remarkable formations include “Amatsu-iwa” and “Namida-iwa,” which, in autumn, stand in vivid contrast against the fiery reds and golds of rowan and maple trees. Another highlight is Hagoromo Falls, selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. Here, the cliffs are beautifully framed by autumn foliage, reaching their peak in early October.
