Sapporo Beer’s History Through 6K and Recreated Beer
Housed in a Hokkaido Heritage-designated red-brick building, Japan’s only beer museum introduces the history of brewing that developed alongside Hokkaido’s development.
Located within Sapporo Garden Park, the Sapporo Beer Museum occupies a red-brick building constructed in 1890 as a factory for the former Sapporo Sugar Company. Inside, photographs and panel displays trace the history of beer brewing, which began alongside the development of Hokkaido. Visitors can see industrial heritage items, including a large boiling kettle once used in the brewing process. The exhibits also trace the history from the Kaitakushi Brewery through the Sapporo Beer Company to Dai Nippon Beer.
The guided "Premium Tour" features a 6K theater presentation that offers a detailed look at the history of the brewery during its early years. At the end of the tour, visitors can enjoy a comparison tasting of two beers: "Fukkoku Sapporo Bakushu," recreated based on the recipe used when the Kaitakushi Brewery opened in 1876, and the modern "Sapporo Draft Beer Black Label."
Through its historic red-brick building and exhibits, the museum offers an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of beer brewing that developed alongside the development of Hokkaido.
