Hongo Shin Memorial Museum of Sculpture, Sapporo
That sculpture you once casually admired on your travels— it just might have been a work by Hongo Shin.
This museum was established in honor of Hongo Shin (1905–1980), a renowned sculptor from Sapporo who is considered a leading figure in postwar Japanese outdoor sculpture. Nestled in a quiet residential area surrounded by seasonal beauty and the gentle sounds of birdsong, the museum offers a peaceful and inspiring setting.
Hongo's outdoor sculptures—about 80 of them—are installed all across Japan. If you've strolled through a park or plaza in Sapporo or elsewhere in Japan, chances are you've encountered one of his works without even realizing it.
The main building features rotating exhibitions from the museum’s collection, each highlighting different themes of Hongo’s creative journey. Special exhibitions focusing on sculpture and three-dimensional art are also held regularly.
Next door, the artist’s original atelier and gallery—now preserved as a memorial—offer a warm, intimate atmosphere. Visitors are welcome to sit in Hongo’s own chair and leisurely view plaster models and iconic pieces of his outdoor sculptures.
