Located within the lush greenery of Maruyama Park, just 30 minutes from central Sapporo, Maruyama Zoo offers a refreshing escape into nature. Established on Children’s Day in 1951, it was Hokkaido’s first zoo, inspired by the success of a traveling zoo event in the city.

Home to around 170 species, the zoo is known for its intimate layout, bringing visitors close to the animals. In recent years, newly developed facilities have added even more immersive experiences.

One of the highlights is the Polar Bear Pavilion, where you can watch these magnificent animals swim powerfully through the water. From the underwater tunnel, it appears as though the polar bears and seals—though in separate enclosures—are gliding side by side.

The Elephant House is another must-see, offering a spacious environment where visitors can observe elephants in a setting that reflects their natural behavior. It also features Japan’s first indoor pool for elephants, where you may see them swim up close.

Don’t miss the popular “Exciting Encounters for Everyone,” where zookeepers share insights during feeding times. Hands-on activities, including forest walks and squirrel monkey feeding, are offered daily, making each visit unique.

The grounds also feature a range of dining options, from cafeterias to cozy cafés. On sunny days, a picnic under the cherry blossoms on the lawn is the perfect way to unwind—bringing together nature, wildlife, and people in harmony.
