Lake Shikaribetsu Kotan
Welcome to a Magical Winter Village with Ice Bars and Open-Air Hot Springs on a Frozen Lake!
Held from late Jan. to late Mar.
Lake Shikaribetsu Kotan is a fleeting village that appears only during winter—built entirely on the frozen surface of Lake Shikaribetsu. In the Ainu language, Kotan means “village,” and all of its structures are made from the lake’s exceptionally clear ice and fresh snow.
One of the highlights is the ice bar, where drinks are served in glasses made of ice. There’s also an open-air hot spring bath on the ice, with a changing area built from snow and ice—an experience you can find nowhere else in the world. The romantic ice chapel even hosts real wedding ceremonies for couples seeking a truly unforgettable moment.
If you're interested in snowmobiles, snow rafting, or other popular winter activities, please contact the Shikaribetsu Lake Nature Center for more information.
