A tranquil retreat by the “Lake in the Sky”

Shikaribetsu Lakeside Hot Spring lies on the western shore of Lake Shikaribetsu, the only natural lake in Daisetsuzan National Park. Surrounded by deep forests and crisp mountain air, it offers a serene escape into Hokkaido’s untouched nature.

At an elevation of about 810 meters, this “Lake in the Sky” invites you to unwind in profound silence. From the lakeside open-air bath, the lake’s crystal-clear waters stretch before you. On calm days, the elegant silhouette of Mt. Tenbo—known as “Lips Mountain”—is reflected on the surface, creating a sense of floating in the sky. The gentle sound of wind through the trees and the quiet presence of water birds enhance this tranquil moment.

The hot spring water flows directly from the source and is rich in sodium, chloride, and hydrogen carbonate. High iron content turns the water a natural brown when exposed to air, while its smooth texture soothes the body.

In winter, the lake freezes into a vast silver landscape. A seasonal “Ice Open-Air Bath” is built on the ice, where you can experience the striking contrast between the hot spring’s warmth and air temperatures that can drop below −20°C, accompanied by the subtle sound of cracking ice.
