Yasuda Kan Sculpture Museum Arte Piazza Bibai
Where Nature and Sculpture Breathe as One
Once a wooden school building filled with children's laughter, this historic site has been reborn as a tranquil art park where the works of world-renowned sculptor Yasuda Kan harmonize with the vast landscape of Hokkaido.
The expansive grounds cover about 70,000 square meters, featuring gentle hills and lush green lawns where around 40 sculptures are thoughtfully placed. Visitors can experience the ever-changing face of nature: the soft breeze of spring, the deep, shimmering greens of summer, the vivid hues of autumn, and the pristine white snow that blankets everything in winter. The smooth texture of marble and bronze sculptures blends seamlessly into the scenery, creating a living gallery that shifts with the seasons. As you wander through the open space, the rustling leaves and birdsong create a soothing soundtrack, while the crisp air of the Sorachi region surrounds you.
Inside the wooden school building dating back to the early 20th century, the galleries still carry the nostalgic atmosphere of former classrooms. Stepping inside, you are enveloped in the warm scent of aged wood and a deep, comforting silence. The museum also hosts monthly "Carving the Heart" workshops, where participants shape their own emotions into white marble.
After your walk, take a moment to relax at the on-site café. Gazing through the window at the greenery and sculptures while enjoying a cup of aromatic coffee is the perfect way to let time slow down.
