Gyokusenkan Heritage Garden
A tranquil Japanese garden of seasonal beauty
Located just a short distance from downtown Iwamizawa, Gyokusenkan Heritage Garden is a peaceful retreat where traditional landscapes, rich history, and seasonal colors come together.
This serene site preserves a lush garden that was once part of a historic hot spring inn. At its center lies Shinji Pond, designed in the shape of the Japanese character for "heart" (kokoro). In summer, around 2,000 white and pink water lilies bloom across the water, creating one of the garden's most memorable sights. Visitors can enjoy changing scenery throughout the year, from cherry blossoms in spring and summer greenery to vibrant autumn foliage reflected on the pond.
The area was home to the hot spring ryokan Gyokusenkan from 1904 to 1979. The name is said to come from the spring water, which bubbled up like jewel-like droplets. Although the inn no longer exists, the historic well remains within the park.
Visitors can also explore Gyokusen-an, an authentic tea house with a copper-plated roof and straw-plaster walls, and admire scenic stones such as Kotaro Stone and Sazare Stone. The garden was selected as one of Iwamizawa's "Top 10 Treasures" and remains a cherished place to experience nature, history, and the beauty of the seasons.
