Miyajima-numa
A Ramsar Convention Registered Wetland
Located northeast of Sapporo City in Bibai City, Miyajima-numa is a wetland designated under the Ramsar Convention. Surrounded by farmland and close to Tsukigata Hot Springs and Kairaku Park, it is famous as Japan's largest and northernmost habitat for greater white-fronted geese. The spring migration period is from mid to late April, and the autumn migration period is from late September to early October. In addition to greater white-fronted geese, other migratory birds such as tundra swans, northern pintails, and whooper swans stop by on their way north from Honshu to Siberia. During peak season, approximately 60,000 greater white-fronted geese inhabit the area.
The sight of tens of thousands of wild birds taking flight all at once in the early morning or evening is breathtaking, attracting many photography enthusiasts who come to capture images of the birds. The Miyajima-numa Waterbird and Wetland Center, located next to the wetland, serves as a base for nature observation activities such as birdwatching. From the observation hut, visitors can closely observe the ecology of wild birds.
