Nestled in the forests of Biei in Hokkaido, Shirogane Blue Pond is famous for its vivid cobalt-blue water and dreamlike scenery.

The pond was formed unexpectedly during the construction of a dam built to protect the area from volcanic mudflows from Mt. Tokachi. Mineral-rich groundwater from Shirahige Falls mixes with the Biei River, and microscopic particles scatter sunlight to create the pond’s striking blue color, which shifts from milky turquoise to deep cobalt depending on the light and season.

Pale trunks of dead larch trees rise quietly from the water, their reflections mirrored on the calm surface. The contrast between the still trees and the brilliant blue water creates one of Hokkaido’s most photographed landscapes.

Surrounded by peaceful forest, the pond offers a tranquil atmosphere where visitors hear only the rustle of leaves and the distant calls of birds. Its appearance changes through the seasons: deeper blue in spring, vibrant contrasts with green forests in summer, colorful foliage in autumn, and a quiet snow-covered landscape in winter.
