Located about 5km from Shirogane Hot Spring in Biei Town, Bougakudai is a stunning viewpoint situated at an elevation of 930m. From here, visitors can enjoy a close-up view of Mt. Tokachi, an active volcano, with its smoking crater and rugged volcanic terrain unfolding right before their eyes—an awe-inspiring encounter with the wild nature of Hokkaido.

A well-maintained walking trail loops around the area, covering about 1.1km and taking about 45 minutes to complete. In summer, the trail is adorned with beautiful alpine plants, while in autumn, the entire area transforms into a canvas of vivid red and gold foliage. If you're lucky, you might even spot the elusive Northern pika, an adorable native species known as the “fairy of the mountains.”

Bougakudai is also a popular base for hiking Mt. Tokachi, offering four hiking courses suitable for everyone from beginners to experienced climbers. The best time to enjoy the vibrant autumn colors is from late September to early October, when the mountainside bursts into breathtaking hues.

The site includes a rest house and a free parking area, making it not only ideal for hikers but also a perfect stop for those on a scenic drive through Biei.
