Mikuni Pass Observatory

Breathtaking views from Hokkaido’s highest national road

Located within Daisetsuzan National Park, Mikuni Pass is one of Hokkaido’s most scenic driving routes. At an elevation of 1,139 meters, it is the highest pass on any national road in Hokkaido, offering sweeping views of untouched wilderness.

From the observatory, a vast expanse of primeval forest stretches out below like an endless green ocean, transforming with the seasons. In autumn, the landscape becomes a vibrant tapestry of red and gold, creating a truly unforgettable panorama.

One of the most iconic sights is Matsumi Ohashi Bridge. This striking red arch bridge, approximately 30 meters high and 330 meters long, curves gracefully across the forest, creating a picture-perfect scene that captures the grandeur of Hokkaido.

At the summit, Mikuni Pass Café offers freshly hand-dripped coffee made from in-house roasted beans, along with soft-serve ice cream and light meals. Relax by the large windows or in the observation area while taking in panoramic views of the surrounding forest and mountains. (Restrooms available; closed in winter.)

Mikuni Pass reveals a different kind of beauty in every season—from the fresh greenery of early summer to brilliant autumn foliage and tranquil snow-covered landscapes in winter. It’s a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to experience the grandeur of Hokkaido’s natural beauty.
