Mikuni Pass Observatory is one of Hokkaido’s most scenic driving routes. Its name comes from its location on the former borders of the Ishikari, Tokachi, and Kitami regions. Situated within the vast Daisetsuzan National Park at an elevation of 1,139m, it is the highest pass on any national road in Hokkaido.

From the observatory, a vast expanse of primeval forest stretches out below like an endless green ocean, changing colors with the seasons. In autumn, the forest transforms into a stunning mosaic of red and gold leaves, creating a truly unforgettable sight.

A highlight of the pass is Matsumi Ohashi Bridge. This striking red arch bridge, about 30m high and 330m long, gracefully curves across the backdrop of the forest, offering a photo-perfect scene that captures Hokkaido’s grand scale.

At the summit, you’ll find Mikuni Pass Café, where you can enjoy freshly hand-dripped coffee made from in-house roasted beans, soft-serve ice cream, and light meals. Large windows and an observation area provide sweeping views of the forest and surrounding mountains, making it a perfect stop for a break. Restrooms are also available, though they are closed in winter.
