Kushiro City Tancho Crane Nature Park is a world-renowned conservation site where you can observe the graceful red-crowned crane up close throughout the year.

The red-crowned crane (Tancho), designated as a Special Natural Monument of Japan, is admired for its striking beauty and revered as a symbol of harmony. Within this expansive park, about 15 cranes live in an environment that closely mimics their natural habitat. As you walk along the observation paths, you will be overwhelmed by the visual beauty of these birds spreading their massive wings to dance before your eyes. The air often rings with their high, piercing calls—a powerful sound that resonates through the stillness of the marsh. From May to June, you may even have the chance to see fluffy chicks covered in soft brown down, a sight so intimate you can almost imagine the soft texture of their feathers.

Established in 1958, the park has been dedicated to protecting these endangered birds and made history in 1970 by achieving the world’s first successful artificial incubation. In the management building’s exhibition room, panels and photographs chronicling this legacy are displayed in a quiet, reflective space. You can also relax in the wood-toned lecture room, where large windows offer a peaceful view of the cranes standing against the backdrop of the marsh. Surrounded by the fresh scent of seasonal flora, visitors can truly feel the coexistence of Hokkaido’s rich nature and these rare, elegant birds.
