Kushiro City Marsh Observatory
Wetland exhibition hall with Yachibōzu motif
An observation and exhibition facility built on a hill overlooking Kushiro Marsh, designed with the motif of the wetland plant Yachibōzu.
The uniquely shaped building standing on a hill in the wetland is designed with the motif of "Yachibōzu," a wetland plant where sedge roots bulge up. Inside, displays recreate the marsh ecosystem with elaborate dioramas, and videos showing the changing of the four seasons are lined up, allowing three-dimensional learning about Kushiro Marsh's nature. From the third-floor observation room and rooftop observatory, you can overlook the magnificent panorama of Kushiro Marsh spreading below, viewing the meandering Kushiro River in the distance and the glittering water surfaces scattered throughout the marsh. The grasslands of the marsh swaying in the wind and the occasional bird calls evoke the breath of Hokkaido's primitive nature.
Around the building, a 2.5 km wooden boardwalk is maintained, and while walking the forest-surrounded trail, you can experience the nature at the edge of the marsh up close. Proceeding while enveloped in the scent of wood and the refreshing air characteristic of wetlands, bird songs echo from between the trees, bringing peace to the heart. Walking the approximately 5 km boardwalk leading to Onnenai Visitor Center, you can step deep into the marsh where wetland plants grow thickly, feeling the diverse expressions of Kushiro Marsh with your whole body.
