Nusamai Bridge

One of Hokkaido's Three Great Bridges built in 1889, offering views of one of the world's three great sunsets

One of Hokkaido's Three Great Bridges spanning the Kushiro River. With a history dating back to the first bridge in 1889, it offers views of one of the world's three great sunsets sinking into the Pacific Ocean.

Nusamai Bridge, located in Kita Odori, Kushiro City, is one of Hokkaido's Three Great Bridges alongside Sapporo's Toyohira Bridge and Asahikawa's Asahi Bridge. The first Nusamai Bridge was built over the Kushiro River in 1889 (Meiji 22), and is known as a bridge that Takuboku Ishikawa, who worked as a newspaper reporter in Kushiro during the Meiji era, crossed daily. The current bridge is the fifth generation built in 1976, with four bronze statues expressing spring, summer, autumn, and winter placed on the railings, creating a landscape symbolic of Kushiro.

At dusk, the sunset sinking beyond the Kushiro River against the Pacific Ocean backdrop can be viewed from the bridge. This scene, called one of the world's three great sunsets, casts a divine glow as the sky changing from orange to deep crimson reflects on the water surface. Standing on the bridge, cold sea breezes brush your cheeks, and the scent of water rising from the river surface drifts by. During sunset hours, seagull cries and wave sounds echo quietly, and city lights gradually begin to glow. At local restaurants, you can taste "Kushiro Sunset Highball" inspired by this beautiful sunset, making this a place to enjoy Kushiro's sunset scenery with all five senses.
