Kushiro City Museum
Striking Crane-Inspired Architecture and Immersive Exhibits
Kushiro City Museum is one of eastern Hokkaido’s leading museums, where visitors can explore the region’s rich natural environment, history, and Ainu culture all in one place.
Set amid a natural landscape, the museum’s distinctive building was designed to resemble a red-crowned crane spreading its wings. Created by Kushiro-born architect Mozuna Kiko, the elegant structure is a landmark admired by architecture enthusiasts as well as museum visitors.
Inside, easy-to-follow exhibits introduce the landscapes and wildlife of Kushiro. The first floor features displays on the region’s marine environment, Japan’s largest freshwater fish—the Sakhalin taimen—and rare salamanders. Realistic replicas, lifelike taxidermy, and large high-definition screens create an immersive experience that brings Kushiro’s natural world vividly to life.
On the second floor, visitors can trace Kushiro’s history from prehistoric times to the modern era. The fourth floor showcases Ainu culture and features a large-scale diorama recreating the Kushiro Marsh, where red-crowned cranes can be observed in both summer and winter settings.
With its striking architecture and engaging exhibits, Kushiro City Museum offers an excellent introduction to the unique nature, history, and culture of eastern Hokkaido.
