Onuma Quasi-National Park

A Scenic Island Chain at the Foot of Mt. Komagatake

Discover a breathtaking landscape of over 100 emerald islands scattered across three serene lakes, set against the dramatic silhouette of an active volcano.

Formed by past eruptions of Mt. Komagatake (1,131m), this quasi-national park in southern Hokkaido is a natural masterpiece. Often likened to a traditional "miniature garden," it features Lake Onuma, Lake Konuma, and Junsai-numa, where 126 small islands create a maze of water and greenery. Designated in 1958, its timeless beauty has earned it the nickname "Matsushima of the Lakes."

In spring, wetlands bloom with white skunk cabbage, while summer brings delicate yellow Nemuro Kouhone lilies to the water’s surface. For a closer experience, take a rowboat onto the lake. The gentle rhythm of the oars and cool breeze create a peaceful escape from daily life.

In autumn, lakeside trees turn gold and crimson, reflecting across mirror-like waters. Cycling the 14km lakeside path lets you hear rustling leaves and breathe in the forest’s crisp scent. In winter, the frozen lakes invite you to try wakasagi (smelt) ice fishing. In every season, the park offers a deep connection to nature. Start your visit at the Onuma International Exchange Plaza for local information.
